Okay, so I really don’t want to study chemistry right now. Which means I’ll be offering a rather detailed criticism of Hank Green’s latest scishow video.

Basically, Hank, you need to stick to talking about space. You made some serious errors in this video, not necessarily in your ability to summarize and report on studies, but in your ability to ask the right questions. 

In the report about women/men and intrasexual competition in the workplace, you (and, I’ll admit, probably the study that you were reporting on) posed the differences between men and women as being just that- actual differences between men and women. “Women feel the need to be not only physically attractive, but also professionally dominant to appeal to men, while guys… just need to… you know, make a good fart joke every once in a while. Sometimes I’m really glad I’m a dude.”

Hank, these differences that you point out don’t exist in a vacuum. You’re talking about serious differences in privileges and oppressions- women need to work far harder to be “attractive,” “appealing,” and basically to be allowed to exist and be successful in the world. And to say “so I’m glad I’m a dude,” is exactly the same as saying “racism is a problem; I’m so glad I’m white.” When you talked about oppression that gay and lesbian people face in your last vlogbrothers video, you didn’t conclude with “Man, I’m glad I’m straight.” Because you understand that you stand in a position of privilege. You were working as an ally by debunking arguments against gay marriage and openly stating your support.

Why, then, would you say to your viewers, “men have a position of privilege. Thank goodness I’m a man”? You say it because you don’t question the essential nature of gender. Because a study said “men this” and “women that” and you said, okay, let me report this. And you thought it might be funny.

Every time I see something problematic in on of your videos, I end by saying this: your viewers are primarily young women. Teenage girls. They listen to you, they look up to you. You are a role model for them. What you say carries a great deal of weight. Try to understand the oppressions at work before you say “this is how women are and I’m glad I’m not one of them.” Because when you say that, you say “Girls, this is how you are, and I’m so glad I’m not like you.” 

You are in a position to do wonderful things. And mostly, you do. But when you screw up, it’s a problem.

(There’s also some problems with the use of fa’afafine as the example of male homosexuality, but that’s not what I’m angry about right now.)

May 16th ♥ 横尾渉 (Yokoo Wataru)

Yokoo-san joined the agency in February, 2001. His brother sent his resume for him. As a junior he was K.K.Kity’s Y and then in 2011 he got to debut with Kis-My-Ft2 being the Y also. He admires senpai Domoto Tsuyoshi & Ninomiya Kazunari.

He thinks of himself as the mom of the group cause he considers his personality to be that of an old lady. Members consider him to be tidy, methodical and very gentle since he is the one to take care of each of them and the group the most, that’s why he is usually addressed as “Yokoo-san” even by older members.  Usually when members forget their schedule, he has some more ready in his backpack, members think he has a doraemon pocket somewhere, even-though always prepared, he always looks kinda speaced out during MCs.

Somehow Yokoo-chan always ends up cleaning dressing rooms, due to his personality. He often says he wants to grow into a respectful person. Wata loves animals, he has 5 dogs. He likes to dance but loves to watch others dance more and so he goes to concerts a lot. Yokoo is currently touring with Kis-My-Ft2.
